Oval and irregularly shaped earthwork pits, up to 77m in length, are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, on a limestone plateau within Dyer’s Wood, Denbury and Torbryan. The earthworks are located within land parcel 420 which is recorded as ‘Coppice Kiln and Quarry’ on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map and Apportionment. Earthworks labelled as ‘Old Quarry’ and a structure labelled as ‘Limekiln’ are also shown in this location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map of the late 19th century and is recorded as MDV48070. The earthworks, which are likely associated with this record, are therefore interpreted as the remains of post-medieval or early 19th century quarrying, possible for limestone extraction, that had likely passed out of use by the mid-19th century.
