The remains of parallel earthwork ridges were visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1946, at Harcombe, Chudleigh. The closely spaced banks measure up to 5 metres wide, crossing the contours of the south-facing slopes north of Harcombe House.
The plot in which the banks are visible is depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey 25-inch first edition map but is listed as pasture on the Tithe Apportionments for Chudleigh. The banks are interpreted as earthworks made to enhance drainage and provide additional depth of soil within the orchard and were probably made between circa 1840 and 1880.
The plot was only lightly covered with trees in 1946. It is now in use as a holiday camp and the banks have probably been levelled.
