Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2018-2019, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 1, Haldon Ridge to Dart Valley (Interpretation). SDV361305.

An irregularly shaped pit is visible on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017 as an earthwork hollow approximately 40m by 23m in size, under improved pasture on a south-west facing combe slope to the south of West Wood, Chudleigh.
The pit is not depicted on the 19th century maps available to the survey, but roughly corresponds to a subdivision of Plot 453 on the Tithe Map for Chudleigh, listed on the apportionments as a coppice. The pit is probably the remains of a quarry or extractive of post-medieval to early 19th century date. Woodland was commonly permitted to become established on such otherwise unproductive plots. The pit was respected by a later footpath.
