Full description

A. L. R., 1920-1921, Wood carving formerly at Great Gutton, 81-82 (Article in Serial). SDV33969.

A painted and carved overmantel was once in position at Great Gutton. Carved from oak, it depicts, probably, two historical characters, one female the other male, over life-size and often re-painted. Carved in the French Renaissance style, it probably came from Normandy. On the centre column, probably re-carved, are the ancient arms of the Davie family. It is no longer in Devon.

Department of Environment, 1959, Crediton RD, 26 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV58276.

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1978, SS80SE10 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV33967.

An interesting 16th century house of rubble and cob construction and a thatch roof. It is of two storeys with an irregular front and a projecting wing on the left (citing DoE 1959).

Department of Environment, 1984, Shobrooke, 24 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV45659.

Great Gutton. A 16th century house of nibble and cob with thatched roof. Two storeys, irregular front, projecting wing on left. Sashes and wood mullioned and transomed windows, some of latter with old leaded lights.

Child, P., 1999, Great Gutton, Shobrooke: Proposed Repair Work and Conversion of Wing to two Units of Holiday Accommodation (Correspondence). SDV347025.

The lean-to is curious in that it seems originally to have formed part of the early house, judging by the sawn-off beam which survives within it. It appears to have risen through two storeys, although how its roof is related to Great Gutton is unclear.

Tyers, C + Hurford, M. + Arnold, A. + Howard, R.E. + Thorp, J., 2009, Dendrochronological Research in Devon: Phase II, 15, building description, photo (Report - Interim). SDV348234.

Great Gutton is a small, 16th century, two storey mansion. It is built of plastered cob and stone rubble under a thatched roof. The main block has a four room and cross passage plan with the hall and parlour to the east of the cross passage and a small service room and kitchen to the west. The three main rooms have rear lateral chimney stacks and the main stair is behind the parlour. The first floor also contains four chambers.
The results of a dendrochronological analysis undertaken on timbers from the roof of the house suggest that, as expected, the house was built in 1591.

Ordnance Survey, 2024, Mastermap 2024 (Cartographic). SDV365834.
