The remains of parallel ridges were visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1995, on the gentle north-east facing slope north-west of Huxbear House, Hennock.
The closely spaced banks, measuring circa 4 metres wide, cross the contours of the slope, dropping in elevation to the north-east. The banks are visible within a plot (341) listed as ‘Orchard behind house’ on the Tithe map and apportionments for Hennock,
The visible earthworks are interpreted as banks made to enhance drainage and provide additional depth of soil within the orchard and were probably made prior to 1840. An early 19th century date is probable, but an earlier origin is possible. The orchard remained densely planted in 1946, but all tree cover had been cleared by 1995.
The banks remain visible as earthworks on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.
