Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2018-2019, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 1, Haldon Ridge to Dart Valley (Interpretation). SDV361305.
The remains of parallel ridges measuring circa 5 metres wide were visible as north-west to south-east aligned earthworks on aerial photographs of 1946, on the east facing slopes of a narrow combe south-east of Haye’s Barn, Chudleigh.
The banks are visible within a plot (985) listed as an orchard on the Tithe map and apportionments for Chudleigh,
The visible earthworks are interpreted as banks made to enhance drainage and provide additional depth of soil within the orchard and were probably made prior to 1840. An early 19th century date is probable, but an earlier origin is possible. The orchard remained densely planted in 1946 but had been largely cleared of trees by 2016.
The banks remain visible as slight earthworks on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.
