Two earthwork pits, in two adjacent fields, are visible on aerial photographs taken from 1946 onwards and on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. The larger is in a field depicted as orchard on the late-19th century mapping, with what appear to be hachures depicting a drop in slope from the field immediately to the north. The earthworks are interpreted as extractive pits that predate the later-19th century, and it is possible that they were associated with either Badcocks Quarry to the north-east, or the umber workings to the south (MDV124337; MDV8199). A smaller feature (MDV51845) within the larger pit is depicted and marked as a quarry on the early-20th century (but not the late-19th century) maps, and it seems that this might be a smaller scale and later phase of extraction, which has been retained as a separate record.
