An oval pit up to circa 71m long and 30m across is visible as a shallow and subtle earthwork on aerial photographs of 1946. The visible earthwork does not correspond with any pit depicted on the 19th century maps available to the survey but does correspond with a small area of woodland shown on the Ashcombe Tithe Map (Plot 385a, Coppice).
This might support the interpretation that the coppice was established in a former extractive pit, a practice observed elsewhere in Devon. The pit is not identifiable as an earthwork on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2015 and has possibly been levelled.
