Alleged site of battle. On mattocks down. Two standing stones and what appears to be a stone row which are supposed by tradition to commemorate some great battle fought on the down in which maddock or maddoc one of the contending chiefs is said to have been slain. Vis=17/9/1953 (os). This tradition is still commonly quoted in the area. The supposed site is partly under grass and partly under plough. No surface finds. According to mr. Serwell of lower mattocks down, a battle was fought here during civil war. Vis="which many conjective was in memory of one maddock there vanquished" (risdon)vis="mattocks-down from a fight there under a general of that name during the civil wars (polwhele).
