Full description

Timms, S., 1985, An Archaeological Assessment of the Remains of the Quay, Mine and Arsenic Works at Gawton, Tavistock Hamlets, 6.1, appendix (Report - Assessment). SDV352213.

6.1 - building west of track. Noted on sources dating to 1906, 1953, 1984. Fair condition. Retaining wall at rear.

Buck, C., 2006, Gawton Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 53 (Report - Assessment). SDV344672.

This small building is shown on the 1867 and later maps. Its function is unknown. Between 1884 and 1904, another building was added to the eastern side of the earlier building, but this has largely now gone. There is the possibility that the building was re-used in the re-working of the waste tips during the First World War. Parts of the gable end and side walls of the building are extant (in some places reinforced by early 20th century concrete. The building should be repointed with lime mortar and the walls capped. Other details: Site No. 55.

Ordnance Survey, 2019, MasterMap 2019 (Cartographic). SDV362729.

Depicted on the modern mapping.

Clive Meaton, 2023, Gawton Mine, Devon- Costed and Prioritised Proposals for Capital Works for the Conservation and Management of Gawton Mine Scheduled Monument (Redacted Costs Version), 139-140, Photograph 75 and 76 (Report - Survey). SDV366131.

A small building is shown here on the 1867 Bedford Estates maps, although its function is unknown. Another building was later added to the eastern side of the original structure but has now mostly gone. In 2006 parts of the gable end and side walls were upstanding, in some places reinforced by early 20th century concrete. It was recommended that the structure was repointed with lime mortar and the wall heads capped to prevent water ingress.
There were no obvious significant structural failures since the 2006 survey, although the poorly surviving ruins were densely overgrown. Both gable ends and parts of the side walls were upstanding, although the eastern gable was leaning inwards. The stonework was found to be extensively open jointed, with localised slipped masonry. The doorway in the northern wall was still legible, and the south wall was the best preserved, but only surviving up to approximately 1.5 metres high. The Mine Building was assessed to be in medium condition. The remains will contain some evidential and historical value relating to the main phases of copper and arsenic extraction during the second half of the 19th century. The Mine Building is considered to have medium significance relative to other features and structures on Site. It is recommended that the ruins are left undisturbed but if sufficient funds become available, vegetation clearance and a structural competency assessment should be undertaken. Other details: Site No. 55
