HER Number:MDV129260
Name:Field system south of Morwell Barton, Gulworthy

Summary

Curvilinear and linear banks, interpreted as relict field boundaries of a possible medieval field system, are visible as pale cropmarks on 1940s digital RAF aerial photographs and as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2010 and 2013. The field boundaries had been removed by the late-19th century.

Curvilinear and linear banks, between 5-14 metres wide and broadly orientated north-west to south-east and north-east to south-west, are visible as pale cropmarks on 1940s digital RAF aerial photographs and as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2010 and 2013. The visible earthworks occupy an area of circa 14 hectares along and on the slopes of a prominent ridge.
The earthworks do not correspond with any curvilinear or linear features shown in this location on the late-19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map, or on later available historic maps, but are in keeping with the surrounding historic field pattern, which is characterised as post-medieval enclosures with medieval elements.
The earthworks are therefore interpreted as relict field boundaries that partly define a series of rectilinear land parcels of a possible medieval field system, the field boundaries having been removed by the late-19th century.

Understanding Landscapes Project, 2020-2021, University of Exeter Understanding Landscapes Project - Volunteer data, 314.8 (Interpretation). SDV363949.
