HER Number:MDV129717
Name:Orchard banks west of Trelana, Pyworthy

Summary

Linear earthwork banks, interpreted as tree planting banks of a post-medieval or early 19th century orchard, are visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013. The orchard had evidently been largely cleared of trees by the mid-19th century and completely cleared by the late 19th century.

NERC, 2013, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) Tellus: Tamar Aerial Survey project area, LIDAR Tellus LAST RETURN 01-JUL-2013 to 31-AUG-2013 (Cartographic). SDV363955.

Narrow linear banks are visible as earthworks.

Hegarty, C., Houghton, E., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2020-2021, Tamar/Lidar; A Single Source Approach to Landscape Survey and Socially Distanced Community Archaeology Area 2 (Culture Recovery Fund project) (Interpretation). SDV364011.

Parallel banks, circa 5m wide and northeast to southwest aligned, are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013. The banks are closely spaced and occupy an area of approximately 0.65 hectares.
The eastern extent of the earthworks corresponds with a small land parcel (311) on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map which is recorded as ‘Orchard’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. This orchard is no longer shown by the time of the late 19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map, suggesting that it had passed out of use by this time.
An orchard in this location supports the interpretation that the earthworks are the remains of post-medieval or early 19th century tree planting banks, the fruit trees having been established on the earthworks for increased soil depth and improved drainage. The orchard had largely passed out of use by the mid-19th century.
