(28/09/2007) Crusher House at SX 4737 6988. A partially ruined building constructed from killas, which contained crushing rollers powered by a waterwheel. Although all the walls are partially collapsed, three corners of the structure survive, the tallest is 3m high. The interior dimensions are 4.9m by 5.6m with walls of 0.65m thick. The interior is strewn with tumbled masonry. Some timber lacing of the walls survives in situ. The wheelpit is on the eastern end of the crusher house, though only the wall adjacent to the main building survives intact; the other three sides appear to have collapsed. The wheelpit is 8.3m long by approximately 1.5m wide. The current height of the surviving wall is 1.4m though the wheelpit has been backfilled. Water was provided by a spillway which diverted water from the Lady Bertha Leat, 100m uphill to the south. The spillway takes a direct route down the steep hillslope and upon reaching the bottom by the track a hollow earthwork pond stored the water. A stone arched tunnel then diverted the water beneath the track where a short section of leat then diverted it to the wheel (citing Newman, P., 28-SEP-2007, EH Archaeological Field Investigation).
