Full description
Fitxpatrick, A. P. + Buterworth, C. A. + Grove, J., 1999, Prehistoric & Roman Sites in East Devon. The A30 Honiton to Exeter Improvement DBFO Scheme, 1996-9. Volume 2. Romano-British Sites, 394 (Monograph). SDV364397.
Flint cobbling was observed at this location during the watching brief for the A30 improvement scheme. Subsequent excavation revealed a 34.0 metre length of a compact cobbled surface comprising pebbles, cobbles and some pieces of sandstone set in a grey-brown clay silt. The width of the surface could not be ascertained as it had been truncated by service trenching. Although no finds were recovered to confirm a Roman date, the cobbled surface, which extended beyond the excavated area, is interpreted as the remains of the Roman road which ran between Dorchester and Exeter via Honiton.
