The depression is situated on the edge of a plot recorded as 'Townsend Common' in the Tithe Survey. The area is depicted as plantation woodland on subsequent maps. The depression is interpreted as an extractive pit of post-medieval to 19th century origin, that ceased extraction by the end of the 19th century.
