(30/04/2005) A probable saw pit at Wheal Emma, a copper mine which operated between 1845 and 1885, latterly under the name of South Devon United between 1878 and 1885. The stone-lined rectangular trench sited on a level-topped mound south of the large spoil heap at Wheal Emma Copper Mine (SX 76 NW 52). The trench is 8.3m long by 1.3m wide and 1.1m deep. The interior is roughly lined with stone which has collapsed inwards in places. The structure is not robust enough to have been a wheelpit and a more likely purpose may have been saw pit. Mine surveyed at 1:1000 and described in detail.
