Summary

Loughtor Mills are known to have operated since the 16th century. The buildings, although no longer used as a mill, are complete. The waterwheel, supplied by a pair of leats running along the east bank of Tory Brook, is the only known surviving one in the area which remians intact.

Loughtor Mills are known to have operated since the 16th century. The buildings, although no longer used as a mill, are complete. The waterwheel, supplied by a pair of leats running along the east bank of Tory Brook, is the only known surviving one in the area which remians intact. Bodman, M., 1998, Water-Powered Sites in Devon (Report - non-specific). SDV305931.

Described as 'longter mills' in 1805 having a mill and house. In 1885 'loughter mills' consisted of a higher barley mill and a lower flour mill c7m away linked by a covered passage which was destroyed during a fire in 1885. The millpond was situated above the mill. A waterwheel adjoined the lower mill (bodman).
