Summary

A possible oval enclosure of unknown but possibly of prehistoric date is visible on images derived from LiDAR data as an earthwork bank encircling the summit of the hill on which the ruinous ‘sham castle’ is built to the north of Castle Hill House.

The sham castle at Castle Hill appears to be sat within a larger muted earthwork enclosure which encircles the hilltop. Is it possible that the 18th century sham was built on the site of an earlier earthwork enclosure?
