Summary

A square enclosure defined by substantial banks is visible on images derived from lidar data as an earthwork fossilised within the extant field pattern north-west of Sticklepath village, Belstone parish. The enclosure has been interpreted as possibly of Roman origin.

University of Exeter, 2020-2021, University of Exeter Unlocking Landscapes Project – validated data, ULDEV158 (Interpretation). SDV365999.

An 80m-square earthwork, fossilised beneath historic boundaries on three sides but on the south the earthwork crosses open land. The magnitude of the earthworks underpinning the hedgeline are starkly different to surrounding historic field boundaries. It is suggested that this may be a partly fossilised earthwork enclosure, whose shape might suggest a Roman date.
