Summary

A hilltop enclosure of probable Iron Age date is visible on images derived from lidar data as an earthwork bank and ditch encircling the summit of hill to the to the west of Coryton Barton, Coryton parish. The outer bank encloses at least two two smaller bank and ditched curvilinear enclosures.

Full description

University of Exeter, 2020-2021, University of Exeter Unlocking Landscapes Project – validated data, ULDEV2 (Interpretation). SDV365999.

At least two sub-circular enclosures and associated earthworks are visible within a larger enclosure of circa 115m diameter.

A subtle curvilinear earthwork is visible, enclosing two curvilinear bank and further less well defined earthwork features.

The outer enclosure is partly under the tree cover of Knowle Wood. Within the outer boundary are visible two clearly defined bank and ditched D-shaped or oval enclosures. Additional features comprise possibly contemporary pits or hut circles.
