HER Number:MDV135229
Name:Ditches and banks under Scrawthorne Plantation, Newton St Cyres

Summary

Linear and curvilinear ditches and probably associated banks are visible as earthworks on images derived from lidar data on the north-facing slopes to the south of New Barn Cross, Newton St Cyres, under the tree cover of Scrawthorne Plantation. The earthworks have been interpreted as evidence of possible mine workings, but might simply be evidence of drainage.

Hegarty, C., 2024, Comment on Unlocking Landscapes project interpretation (Personal Comment). SDV366085.

Earthwork hollows visible across the wider area of Scrawthorne Plantation might be related to historic tin and manganese mining, with known workings recorded in this area (MDV9308). However, it seems more probable that the features identified here relate to historic drainage.
