HER Number:MDV135235
Name:Pond or extractive pit east of Blacker Barton, Staverton

Summary

A roughly circular pit or hollow surrounded by a slight bank is visible on images derived from lidar data as an earthwork up to circa 55m in diameter, on the gentle east-facing slopes east of Blacker Barton, Staverton parish, overlooking the River Hems. The earthwork does not correspond to any feature depicted on the Tithe Map or Ordnance Survey first edition 25 inch map. It has been interpreted as a possible former pond but an origin as a quarry or extractive pit of post-medieval date may be more likely.

Hegarty, C., 2024, Comment on Unlocking Landscapes project interpretation (Personal Comment). SDV366085.

The earthwork has been interpreted as a possible former pond. It does not correspond to any feature depicted on the Tithe Map or Ordnance Survey first edition 25 inch map and an origin as a quarry or extractive pit and associated spread spoil bank may be more probable.
