Full description

Environment Agency, 2021, University of Exeter Understanding Landscapes Project - Lidar visualisation (Cartographic). SDV366001.

Earthwork banks approximately 5m wide are visible enclosing a rectilinear area approximately 31m by 29m in size. A 4m wide break in the southernmost bank may represent an entrance. A further linear bank up to 7m wide situated approximately 15m to the south-west and south-east and aligned parallel to the rectilinear enclosure probably defines a second, outer enclosure circuit. Linear and curvilinear banks visible as earthworks approximately 70m to the south possibly represent a field system associated with the rectilinear enclosure.

Hegarty, C., 2024, Comment on Unlocking Landscapes project interpretation (Personal Comment). SDV366085.

The earthworks of the Romano-British enclosure and associated field system were potentially incorporated into later, medieval or post-medieval piecemeal enclosure or encroachment onto Hence Moor.

Horner, B., 2024, Lidar interpretation (Personal Comment). SDV366090.

The morphology of the rectilinear enclosure as visible on the Unlocking Landscapes lidar visualisation supports an interpretation as a farmstead settlement of probable Romano-British date, although a medieval origin is possible.
