Summary

Linear and curvilinear banks are visible as earthworks on images derived from lidar data on a south-east facing spur to the north-west of Halshayne Manor Farm, Widworthy parish. The earthworks represent former field boundaries, previously part of a wider system of strip fields and lynchets, probably of medieval date.

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The visible earthwork banks correspond in part with curvilinear boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Watchcombe.

The visible earthwork banks correspond in part with curvilinear boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Widworthy but many are not depicted, indicating that they form part of a previously more extensive field system, probably comprising strip fields and lynchets of medieval date, that had been partly cleared prior to the mid-19th century. Earthworks banks centred on circa SY2208698541 may represent the location of a former settlement or farmstead.
