HER Number:MDV135275
Name:Curvilinear enclosure north-west of Weekhayne Common, Southleigh

Summary

Parallel curvilinear banks are visible as earthworks on images derived from lidar data on the north-west facing combe slopes to the north-west of Weekhayne Common, Southleigh. The banks are probably the remains of field boundaries of medieval date, but might represent an enclosure of possible prehistoric origin.

Horner, B., 2024, Lidar interpretation (Personal Comment). SDV366090.

Two parallel curvilinear banks are visible as earthworks, defining a possible double bank-defined D-shaped enclosure. The banks may simply be the remains of field boundaries of medieval date, but might represent an earlier enclosure of possible prehistoric origin. The earthworks correspond in part with boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Southleigh, but the boundaries have been completely removed by the later 19th century, with the exception of the north-east side which remains fossilised in the extant field pattern.
