Edwards, M. + Trick, S., 2023, Land at Venn Farm, Sowton, Devon: An Archaeological Magnetometer Survey (Report - Geophysical Survey). SDV366098.

Substrata were commissioned by Cotswold Archaeology in 2023 to conduct an archaeological magnetometer survey of c. 19 hectares of land at Venn Farm on the outskirts of Exeter in Devon. Forty-one geophysical anomaly groups were detected of which all were interpreted as representing potential buried archaeological deposits.

In area C and D, anomaly Groups 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 37 and 41 are probably former land divisions. They are broadly aligned with the field pattern visible on the tithe map (1837) and so may reflect the post-medieval division regime. The geophysical anomalies suggest more subdivisions in the layout possibly reflective of an earlier period, assuming a trend towards larger fields. Some of these anomalies are visible as cropmarks on current Google Maps satellite imagery (2023).

Group 35 is possibly the same feature as a recorded ditch in the HER (MDV28620).
