Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The earthworks do not correspond to any boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Lewtrenchard.

University of Exeter, 2020-2021, University of Exeter Unlocking Landscapes Project – validated data, ULDEV3 (Interpretation). SDV365999.

A distinct rectangular earthwork with ditch and bank, measuring 60x55m, with a secondary earthwork to eastern side is set within an area of relict field systems, all now beneath woodland. The earthworks are very distinct when visited on the ground.

Environment Agency, 2021, University of Exeter Understanding Landscapes Project - Lidar visualisation (Cartographic). SDV366001.

A series of linear and curvilinear banks and ditches on images derived from lidar data.

Hegarty, C., 2024, Comment on Unlocking Landscapes project interpretation (Personal Comment). SDV366085.

The relict field system most likely post-dates and incorporates the earthworks of the probably later prehistoric enclosure MDV133048. The curvilinear characteristics of some of the banks, notably those crossing the contours of the slope, might indicate a medieval date for the field system, but it is possible that it incorporates earlier elements. The earthworks do not correspond to any boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Lewtrenchard and therefore probably were cleared some considerable time prior to the mid-19th century.
