Full description

Buck, C., 2006, Gawton Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 57-58 (Report - Assessment). SDV344672.

The Miners Dry (Phase 2 boiler house) is located at SX 45038 68810. This building has largely collapsed through the rotting of structural timbers. Much of the interior of the building is full of rubble. Other details: Site No. 61.

Clive Meaton, 2023, Gawton Mine, Devon- Costed and Prioritised Proposals for Capital Works for the Conservation and Management of Gawton Mine Scheduled Monument (Redacted Costs Version), 156, Figure No. 7 (Report - Survey). SDV366131.

The building located at SX 45038 68810 was provisionally interpreted as a Miners Dry and was probably built as part of an enlargement to the original Boiler House (Site No. 60). It formed part of the Pumping Engine House (Site No. 59) complex. In 2006 the building was largely collapsed and much of the interior was infilled with rubble. No specific recommendations were included.
The Miner’s Dry was found as described in 2006. The site was very overgrown and no associated structural remains were securely identified. Some low truncated remains may have been concealed by vegetation or will have survived as buried deposits. Any such deposits are likely to be stable, and so, on this basis, the site was assessed to be in medium condition. The remains are considered to be of medium significance, relative to other features and structures within the Site. The location of theMiners Dry is based on the Site Plan Figure No. 7. Other details: Site No. 61.

Jon Avent, 2023, Gawton Mines, Gulworthy, Devon- Structural Condition Report, 34 (Report - Survey). SDV366140.

Vegetation present, particularly at high level, restricting access. Remove vegetation and consolidate wall heads. Other details: Site No. 61.
