---|
Summary
The Crusher and Grinder was located at SX 45021 68807 on the north side of the engine house, next to the loadings. In 1883 a Stone Breaker was erected alongside the Crusher and Grinder, which would have performed an initial ore breaking role, so that the Crusher and Grinder could then produce much smaller pieces.

The crusher building was located at SX 45021 68807 in front of the cylinder engine house building next to the loadings which would have sited the winding drum wheel and shaft drive to the crusher. This building has largely collapsed. It may be the case that the crushing and stone breaking apparatus was dismantled and re-used at the top part of the mine in the new automatic dressing floor. Also the site was next to a large spoil heap which has been partly pushed over the building. Much of the interior of the building is full of rubble, although there are 3.0 metre high walls on the east side of the building that are still extant. Other details: Site No. 64.

The Crusher and Grinder was located at SX 45021 68807 on the north side of the engine house, next to the loadings, which would have housed the winding drum wheel and shaft drive. In 1883 a Stone Breaker was erected alongside the Crusher and Grinder, which would have performed an initial ore breaking role, so that the Crusher and Grinder could then produce much smaller pieces. In 2006 the building was largely collapsed, and its footprint infilled and partly covered by mine waste, derived from the adjacent spoil heap. It was not safely accessible, although walls on the east side of the building did survive up to 3 metres high. Fencing around the area was recommended.
Parallel walls were identified measuring up 2.2 metres high and 750 millimetres thick, with a surviving length of up to 5 metres during this survey. The remains, although visible enough for assessment, were still overgrown. The walls were relatively free of spoil, so it is likely that some of the infill described in 2006 has since been dug away. The stonework was frequently open jointed with localised voids, and areas of collapse were also noted. The Crusher and Grinder was assessed to be in medium condition. The Crusher and Grinder was an important element of the mine dating from 1866 so will contain important evidential and historical value dating from this time. The remains are considered to be of medium significance, relative to other features and structures within the Site. Vegetation should be cleared from on and around the Crusher and Grinder, with structural repairs and monitoring undertaken. The location of the Crusher and Grinder is based on the Site Plan Figure No. 7. Other details: Site No. 64.
Jon Avent, 2023, Gawton Mines, Gulworthy, Devon- Structural Condition Report, 35 (Report - Survey). SDV366140.
Vegetation present, particularly on wall heads, restricting access. Extensive collapse and delamination of remains to flank walls. Remove vegetation, consolidate wall heads and masonry. Other details: Site No. 64.
