Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The late 19th century map depicts Walson Barton as a large-scale traditional farmstead laid out around a courtyard surrounded by a large orchard. The farmstead includes a horse engine house with the main farmhouse located to the northeast. The size and function of the farmstead indicates it was quite successful. The earlier circa 1840 tithe map show that the farmstead was origionally located to the south and was still a fairly large farmstead at this time which also included a horse engine house. The farmstead likely moved northwards to gain easier access to the road. Modern farming methods resulted in the break up of this traditional courtyard layout of which Walson Barton is a good example of.

Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 1904-1906 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV63521.

The layout of Walson Barton is little changed when compared to the earlier 1880s-90s mapping, apart from the addition of three small buildings.

Carbonell, B. M. H., 1931, The Nymet area (Article in Serial). SDV44635.

Walson Barton was formerly called Limet.

Ordnance Survey, 2024, Mastermap 2024 (Cartographic). SDV365834.

Modern mapping show that the form of Walson Barton has greatly changed, no longer set around a courtyard. Modern farming methods resulted in the break up of this traditional layout and instead, replaced with large buildings which could house modern farming equipment and be able to meet the demands of large-scale dairy industry.
