HER Number:MDV135545
Name:Docton Farm Mill, Hartland

Summary

The annex on the north side of the former range of barns on the south side of the yard was formerly a watermill. The water entered from a pond in the yard and flowed out through a sluice at the rear of the building, returning to the stream to the east. It is possible that the machinery was originally powered by a horse engine which was replaced by water power in the later 19th century. The barns and mill are now converted.

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

A rectangular building with what appears to be a horse engine house is depicted. The leat and pond are not shown.

Hobbs, S., 2024, Docton Farm Mill, SJH84 (Worksheet). SDV366376.

To the south-east of the present farm house within the present yard was formerly a large pond served by a leat which entered the farmyard from the south. The water ran from the pond into a mill building which formed an annex on the north side of a row of barns on the south side of the yard. The mill is built against a steep bank and there is a wheel pit deep enough for an overshot wheel. The water flowed out through a sluice at the rear of the building, returning to the river to the east. The wheel pit has recently been uncovered again as the building is being converted into a cottage. There are remains of beams and pulleys around the farm and also a pair of displaced millstones. Other details: photos

Ordnance Survey, 2025, Mastermap 2025 (Cartographic). SDV366286.

The barns and mill annex are now Waterwell Cottage.
