| Name: | Rectilinear enclosure to the east of West Whitnole, Stoodleigh |
|---|
Summary
A rectilinear enclosure is visible on images derived from lidar data, as earthwork banks on the south-east facing slopes to the east of West Whitnole. The earthworks are probably post-medieval in date but possibly incorporate an enclosure of prehistoric origin.

The visible earthwork banks correspond in part to field boundaries depited on the Tithe Map for Stoodleigh.

Linear banks are visible as earthworks.
Hegarty, C., 2025, Comment on Unlocking Landscapes project and related lidar and aerial photograph interpretations (Interpretation). SDV366411.
Linear banks measuring 5m to 7m wide are visible as earthworks on images derived from lidar data, defining three sides of a rectilinear enclosure approximately 42m by 37m in size on the south-east facing slopes to the east of West Whitnole. The south-west and south-east banks correspond to field boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Stoodleigh. It is thought likely that they represent boundaries associated with in-field enclosure of post-medieval date that had been partly cleared and amalgamated into a larger plot by the mid-19th century. It is, however, possible that the rectilinear earthworks are the remains of an enclosure of prehistoric date that was incorporated into the later field pattern, as suggested by Horner.
Horner, B., 2025, Lidar interpretation (Personal Comment). SDV366415.
Rectilinear enclosure, or result of in-field pattern recorded on Tithe Map.
