Summary

Curvilinear banks are visible on images derived from lidar data, as earthworks on the south-east facing slopes to the south-east of Mackham. The banks might be the remains of field boundaries of medieval or post-medieval origin and may in part relate to extractive activity, specifically marl pits.

Plots 1960 and 1961 are named ‘Great Marleland’ and ‘Little Marleland’.

Curvilinear banks are visible on images derived from lidar data, as earthworks on the south-east facing slopes to the south-east of Mackham, just below the plateau edge. The plots, numbered 1960 and 1961 on the Tithe apportionment for Hemyock, are named as ‘Great Marleland’ and ‘Little Marleland’. These may reflect previous extractive activity within the lower plots, which may have created or enhanced the apparent divisions or boundary banks. The visible earthworks do not correspond with field boundaries depicted on the Tithe map for Hemyock, which might indicate that the extractive activity had ceased prior to the mid-19th century.

Possible enclosures/boundary banks to the SE of Mackham. The fields downslope have ‘Marle’ name elements, which may suggest extraction, which may have accentuated possible bank features.
