HER Number:MDV135593
Name:Irregular enclosure to the south-east of Fair View Farm, Luppit

Summary

Curvilinear banks are visible as earthworks on images derived from lidar data, defining an irregularly shaped enclosure on the south-east facing slopes below Fair View Farm, Luppit. It is possible that the enclosure reflects piecemeal encroachment onto Hense Moor that was subsequently incorporated into medieval enclosure.

Hegarty, C., 2025, Comment on Unlocking Landscapes project and related lidar and aerial photograph interpretations (Interpretation). SDV366411.

Curvilinear banks are visible as earthworks up to 10m wide on images derived from lidar data, defining an irregularly shaped enclosure up to 100m long and 45m wide, on the south-east facing slopes below Fair View Farm, Luppit.
The visible earthworks correspond to an enclosure depicted on the Tithe Map for Luppit and the Ordnance Survey First and Second Edition 25 inch maps. The boundary remains visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s and was therefore cleared in the second half of the 20th century.
The plot is named as ‘Tadball Plot’ on the Tithe Apportionment for Luppit, which as suggested by Horner, may relate to a topographic feature. Alternatively, this may be derived from a personal name, such as a corruption of Tidball. The enclosure might reflect piecemeal encroachment onto Hense Moor, as seen to the east, that was subsequently incorporated into the surrounding medieval enclosure based on strip fields.

Horner, B., 2025, Lidar interpretation (Personal Comment). SDV366415.

Possible small ovoid enclosure on LiDAR. Separate plot on TM and early OS. Tithe Apportionment records as ‘Tadball Plot’. The ‘ball’ element may be significant, or just topographic.
