Two pits are visible on images derived from lidar data as earthworks under the tree cover of Tor Hill plantation, near the summit of Tor Hill. The smaller pit is irregular in plan and measures approximately 20m long and 17m wide cut into the west-facing slope of the hill. This corresponds to Plot 776 on the Tithe Map for Staverton, named as ‘Quarry’ on the accompanying Apportionments. A larger, elongated sub-rectangular pit measuring 77m long and 28m wide is cut into the north-east facing upper slopes, and corresponds to Plot 777, named as ‘Quarry’ on the Tithe Apportionments. The summit of Tor Hill (Plot 775) is listed as under arable cultivation on the Apportionments, but depicted as plantation on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map, indicating that the pits were abandoned by the late-19th century.
