Linear and curvilinear banks visible as earthworks on images derived from lidar data correspond to field boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Awliscombe.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The earthwork banks do not correspond to field boundaries shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map, but do match depicted tree alignments.

Environment Agency, 2021, University of Exeter Understanding Landscapes Project - Lidar visualisation (Cartographic). SDV366001.

Linear and curvilinear banks are visible as earthworks.

Hegarty, C., 2025, Comment on Unlocking Landscapes project and related lidar and aerial photograph interpretations (Interpretation). SDV366411.

Linear and curvilinear banks are visible as earthworks on images derived from lidar data, to the south of Egland House, Awliscombe. The earthworks correspond to field boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Awliscombe. The earthworks do not correspond to field boundaries shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map, which depicts field boundaries on a different, north-south, west-east alignment. This supports the interpretation that the earlier field pattern, potentially of medieval origin, was cleared between circa 1840 and 1880. Tree alignments depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map correspond to the earlier boundaries, indicating that mature hedgerow trees were retained from as ornamental landscape features. The earthworks are cut by modern services from north-east to south-west. The relict earthworks west of approximately ST14800122 are considerably more plough spread than those south of Egland House.

Horner, B., 2025, Lidar interpretation (Personal Comment). SDV366415.

Possible parkland/garden feature or former field boundary. Eastern part of field appears to be defined by a wooded bank (see RAF and modern APs). Tree line but not bank marked on 1st Ed OS. Bisected by gas pipeline. To the west there is a bank parallel to this on LiDAR. Also tree-lined on 1st ED OS. May well be former (? Medieval) field boundaries, the trees of which were retained in landscaping in front of Egland House.
