Summary

A plantation bank of probable post-medieval to 19th century date is visible on images derived from lidar data as an earthwork enclosing a sub-oval plot on the southern tip of Broadley Hill. The plantation is possibly located within an enclosure of earlier, potentially prehistoric date.

The visible earthworks correspond to a coniferous plantation depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map.

A curvilinear bank 2m to 3m wide with an external ditch of similar width. are clearly visible as earthworks. A more subtle external bank is also possibly visible.

A curvilinear bank 2m to 3m wide with an external ditch of similar width, are clearly visible as earthworks on images derived from lidar data enclosing a sub-oval plot 88m long and 58m wide, on the southern tip of Broadley Hill. The visible earthworks correspond to a coniferous plantation depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map, that appears to overlie and partly supersede field boundaries of probable post-medieval date. The plantation earthworks are therefore probably post-medieval to 19th century in date. Horner noted a slight counterscarp bank external to the ditch, which might support the interpretation that the plantation reused the site of an earlier, potentially prehistoric enclosure.

Possible enclosure. Contains conifer plantation on 1st Ed OS, so may be relatively modern. But LiDAR suggests counterscarp bank on north side, also continuation of bank on south side, south of more ‘zig-zaggy’ bank and ditch. Also possible slight earthworks of enclosure, or field system, to north.
