A circular plantation, an ornamental landscape feature or ‘eye catcher’ of probable 18th to 19th century date, is depicted on the Tithe map for Holcombe Burnell. The tithe apportionments described the cultivation of the plot as ‘Brake and Plantation’, which might indicate that it was a relatively recent creation in circa 1840. The occupier and owner is named as James Pitman Esq of South Ramridge, which was presumably in the vicinity of North Ramridge, approximately 750m east of the clump, and intervisible with it.
The clump is named Stilefield Clump on maps from the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch Map onwards and remains extant. The plantation bank and a section of relict field post-medieval boundary preserved within the plantation are visible as earthworks on images derived from lidar data.
