Full description

Historic England, 2025, 11 New Street, Chagford, Newton Abbot (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV366445.

Notification that 11 New Street is being considered for addition to The National Heritage List for England. Historic England have undertaken an assessment of the property in order to consider whether it has special architectural or historic interest.
11 New Street was likely constructed in the C18, possibly as an addition to 7 and 9 New Street, and it is understood to have been later adapted to a shop and bakery. The part of the building fronting New Street appears to be an early C19 addition. The set of buildings, 7-11 New Street and the outbuildings, is shown under a single ownership and occupation on the tithe map and apportionment of Chagford Parish in 1840. The map shows 11 New Street with its projecting bays to both road elevations.
By 1880, the buildings appear to have been split into at least five different residences, as shown on the First Edition Ordnance Survey Map, but by the Second Edition in 1904 they had been consolidated into a single dwelling at 7 and 9, with outbuildings to the rear, and a separate dwelling at 11 including the former store and workshop to its rear. In the early C21, 11 was comprehensively refurbished with new floors, staircase, an inserted attic room and some replacement roof structure. The rear store and workshop were converted to a dwelling, and most of the adjacent outbuilding to the north was acquired from 7 New Street. In 2025, the outbuilding remains in use as storage.
See report for full details of the property.
