A programme of archaeological work was undertaken along the route of a 13.5km long water main from Roborough to Yondertown. A previous geophysical survey had identified a number of areas likely to contain archaeological deposits.
A 0.9m wide trackway [1004] was identified within area CP5. It had a cobbled surface with wheel ruts and two flanking ditches. It was aligned north-west to south-east and possibly led to the mine complex in the field to the south.
Possibly part of the same trackway, or another, was also recorded to the north-west [1704]. It was in a much poorer state of preservation. The geophysical survey, however, recorded a linear anomaly running from 1004 towards 1704.
The trackways may link the road south from Brownie Cross to an ancient route south to Plympton along the western edge of Fernhill Wood.
Two small, shallow pits [1700] and [1702] were also identified within the line of the pipeline corridor. Both had charcoal-rich fills.
