Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Cuddenhay marked, comprising a large square yard with ranges of buildings including the house on northern side, at the northern end of the east side and along the south side. A garden is shown adjoining the south-west corner of the house and a well is marked to the west. There are orchards to the north-east and to the south alongside Cuddenhay Lane.

Gover, J. E. B. + Mawer, A. + Stenton, F. M., 1932, The Place-Names of Devon: Part Two, 402 (Monograph). SDV337894.

Cuddenhay is first recorded in 1330, the name meaning Cudding's enclsoure.

Cox, J. + Thorp, J. R. L., 2020, Cuddenhay, East Worlington (Report - Survey). SDV363881.

Cuddenhay is built on the springline on a gentle hillslope. It is shown on the Tithe Map and recorded as Coddenhay on the 1841 Tithe Apportionment. Plot 159 is identified as the House, Yard etc. The map shows the basic L-plan of the house together with several farm buildings. The 1888-9 first edition OS map shows the plan of the house very much as it is today with the narrow service yard adjoining, with the linhay on the south side and service sheds to the north. The cider house is also shown which looks to be attached to the northern end of the barn. The buildings along the south side of the yard have gone, but their platform remains. The 1903-5 second edition map shows the horse engine house against the barn and the pigsties at the southern end.
The farmhouse dates to the second half of the 15th century but was refurbished in the mid-late 17th century and again in the late 19th-early 20th century. The surviving traditional farm buildings are 19th century.

Ordnance Survey, 2025, Mastermap 2025 (Cartographic). SDV366286.

The southern range is no longer extant.
