| Name: | Holwell Farm, East Down |
|---|
Summary
The main range of the farmhouse is probably 18th century but the kitchen wing is older, at least 17th century in date. The farmhouse is accompanied by a good group of traditional farm buildings. These are mostly 19th century although the former stable/cow house appears to have formerly been a barn and probably has an older core. A particularly interesting feature of the farmstead is the survival of a waterwheel which once drove machinery in the adjacent barn.

Full description
Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.
Farmstead depicted comprising a large, broadly L-shaped farmhouse with a rectangular farm building to the east and a linear range of buildings to the south, including a horse engine house. To the east of the main farmstead is a disparate group of farm buildings set within small fields.
Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.
Holwell marked. Comparison with the Tithe Map shows the addition of buildings on the north side of the rectangular yard. On the south side, the horse engine house depicted on the Tithe Map appears to have gone. Only two or three of the individual buildings are shown to the east.

The main range of the farmhouse is probably 18th century but the kitchen wing is older, at least 17th century in date. The farmhouse is accompanied by a good group of traditional farm buildings. All are of local slatestone rubble under natural slate roofs. The farm buildings appear to be 19th century although it seems likely that what was last used as a stable and cow house was previously a barn and thus probably has an older core. A particularly interesting feature is the survival of an 18ft diameter waterwheel, which originally drove machinery in the adjacent barn, the latter now partly converted and partly deroofed. The waterwheel was powered by a water supply from a pond on the west side of the house, now largely silted up. There are various pieces of machinery lying in the vicinity of the waterwheel.
