Summary

Pillar base at leigh grange, from cheston farm barn. Vis=-/12/1978 (robinson, r. ). A carefully sloped granite pillar base now at leigh grange was brought from cheston farm, ugborough parish. It is a square pyramid shouldered with a flat top in which is a round hole 3.5cm diameter, presumably for a dowel to steady a timber or granite post. Height 55cm, width base 57cm, width top 16cm. It was suggested by the owner that the pyramidal shape was a device to prevent carts etc from backing too close to the actual pillar.
