Mill. John Heathcoat and Company. In 1803 John Heathcoat invented a bobinette lace machine and in 1809 improved and patented it. In 1816 he moved to Tiverton and started lace-making in a recently built cotton mill which had proved unsuccessful. The two gateway lodges appear to be the only original buildings.

The lacemill was originally a cotton mill erected 1792, and destroyed by fire in 1936; taken over by Heathcoat in 1816, the two gate lodges are at the West Exe end of the factory.

The main factory is a plain five storey red brick rebuilding by HSW Stone after a fire in 1936. A four storey extension which survived the fire has straight headed windows and brick bands between the floors.

In 1816 the factory was taken over by lace-maker John Heathcoat. A sketch map, probably dating from soon after this, shows an L-shaped factory building. This was later expanded or rebuilt by Heathcoat.

Two bells, or parts of them, from Heathcotes are now in the Tiverton Museum. Both may have come from the earlier mill on the site; one has the date 1805 on it.
