HER Number:MDV13833
Name:Great Gate, Frithelstock Priory

Summary

It is suggested that a kink in the boundary wall shown on the 1904-6 Ordnance Survey map may indicate the site of the gateway to the priory. There are earthworks in the vicinity. The gateway is recorded as standing in 1796.

Full description

Maton, G., 1794-1796, Observations on Western Counties of England (Unknown). SDV339338.

The gate was still standing 1796 in a line with the south wall of the burial ground at that time.

Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV325644.

There is a noticeable kink in the boundary wall to the east of the graveyard.

Ralegh Radford, C. A., 1933, Frithelstock Priory and Parish Church, 3-27 (Article in Serial). SDV18700.

Immediately outside the modern extension of the churchyard are mounds indicating a substantial foundation probably covering the base of the gateway.

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1978, SS41NE9, SS41NE9.6 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV18672.

Site visit 14th December 1953. The area, under grass, shows strong traces of extensive foundations but none could be defined as probable foundations of the gate.
Site visit 27th November 1978. A number of amorphous mounds lie north-east and south of priory ruins. Some result from stone robbing.

Timms, S., 1983, Frithelstock Priory (Site Visit). SDV17955.

Site visit 12th March 1983. The location given by the Ordnance Survey lies in field which contains substantial earthworks (to the south-east of the abbey church). A bnrief visit did not reveal signs of any recent disturbance. The earthworks require detailed survey.

Weddell, P. J., 1986, Frithelstock Priory (Report - Survey). SDV18682.

The burial ground was extended in 1914 and the gate should therefore lie about 12-13m inside the line of the present road, probably on the east side of the church. One of the mounds was indentified as a possible foundation of a north-south wall at 5-6m from the churchyard wall. There are some suggestive kinks in the boundary line shown on the early 25" map. Part of the structure may lie under the graveyard.
