Name:FARMSTEAD in the Parish of North Tawton

Summary

Excavated by jope 1938-9. A farmstead consisting of a longhouse, barn and corn-drying kiln. Occupation probably began by the later 12th century, with abandonment at the end of the 13th century. The longhouse, built of local stone with clay bonding was of 2 phases. It had three rooms, the central one having a hearth, and the lower one interpreted as an animal byre. The roof (thatch) would have been carried on 3 trusses resting on low walls. The stone-built barn lay n. E. Of the house. N of the house was a small drystone oval structure with stone passage, interpreted as a corn-drying kiln. Pottery was mainly of the 13th century; local glazed and unglazed wares, probably obtained from the market at north tawton.(jope + threlfall). Site now erased by ploughing.(os).
