Timms, S., 1982, Middle Coombe (Site Visit). SDV43284.

Site visit 17th August 1982. House briefly seen. Appears to be a three room cross passage plan with lower room having moulded ceiling and panelling. To the rear (north) of the house a massive stack with timber lintels survives from another early structure which was taken down within living memory. See sub-sheet for gatehouse.

Department of Environment, 1988, Uplowman, 130-131 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV338496.

Exceptionally well preserved late C16-early C17 (probably an earlier core). The house has a 4-room-and-through-passage plan. The kitchen/bakehouse was in a detached rear block. Good interior. Very detailed description in DoE listing.

Middle Combe is essentially a well-preserved, two storey early 17th house [sic]. It originally had a three room and cross passage plan to which an extension was added to the east end in the 19th century to create four room plan. The original house therefore comprised a hall and parlour (now the kitchen) with rear lateral stacks which also serve the floor above while to the east was a service room. The farmhouse is notable for the survival of many original oak-framed windows.
The house faces south over an enclosed forecourt on the south side of which is a gatehouse. To the rear of the farmhouse is another courtyard which has the remains of a detached kitchen block. Both contemporary with the house.
The results of a dendrochronological analysis undertaken on timbers from the roof of the house provided a felling date of 1536-56, suggesting that the house was built in the mid 16th century.

Ordnance Survey, 2024, Mastermap 2024 (Cartographic). SDV365834.
