Full description

Department of Environment, 1959, Tiverton RD, 40 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV54004.

Rubble and cob with slate roof. Two storeys. Carriageway entrance with cambered wooden arches. 16th century. One doorway has cambered head and the mullioned window over entrance at rear has carved frame.

Timms, S., 1982, Middle Coombe (Site Visit). SDV43284.

Site visit: 17th August 1982. The gatehouse lies on the south side of house. The early portion has a central carriageway entrance in line with the door of the main house. A range running north from west end is a later, ?C19 addition. Parts of the south wall have been rebuilt and some windows changed in the recent past. Mullioned windows survive on the rear (north) side including the small carved frame noted by the DoE. This frame has foliage decoration. Internally the gatehouse is plain and much altered. One fireplace remains. It is due for conversion.

Late C16-early C17, refurbished in the late C19 and modernised circa 1970 plastered stone rubble, maybe with some cob; stone rubble stack topped with C19 and C20 brick; slate roof, formerly thatch (detailed description in DoE listing).
