Spitchwick, widecombe in the moor. A small medieval settlement and the domesday manor of espice wita. Some details of ownership and tenancies are given in 1086 and 1244 and subsequent early descents (reichel).

Spitchwick is first mentioned in the domesday book as espicewita. It is recorded in various documents throughout the middle ages with different spellings. This name is probably a compound of the old english spic, meaning bacon and wic hence 'bacon-farm' (gover + mawer + stenton).
