In the area of Hembury, Buckland Filleigh, is the site of a medieval farmstead known as Embury which is mentioned in a deed of about 1285.

Hembury Cottages are mentioned in a document of 1285. The name appears again in a document of 1379. The name Hembury means (at) the high stronghold. There is an ancient camp here.
